Four or Five Elements?
I have always been wondering why 5 elements are often mentioned in Eastern cultures, but only 4 elements are mentioned in most Western cultures.
In most Eastern cultures, the five elements are mentioned: Metal, Wood, Water, Fire and Earth.
In some Asian cultures, the center is expressed as Earth, the north is representing Water, the south is represented by Fire, the west is represented by Metal and the east is represented by Wood.
Nevertheless, in some Western traditions, the south is represented by Fire, the west is represented by Water, the north is represented by Earth and the east is represented by Wind.
In other words, in some Western traditions only Earth, Water, Fire, and Wind are considered the only elements.
It confused me recently.
Finally, I figured out my own theory.
That is, Fire represented by in a south direction in both cultures, while Wind and Wood are represented in the east and Metal and Water in the west.
